Philadelphia has been in the news a lot lately from the Super Bowl win in February, to hometown hero Meek Mill’s incarceration and release, and now the Sixers taking the NBA Playoffs by storm!
Out of all of those wonderful things Philly has going on, I’m most excited about the release of rapper Meek Mill! After months of what appeared to be an unjust incarceration, Meek is finally a free man as of yesterday! He even attended a Sixers NBA Playoffs game in Philadelphia the same night. To top it off, the Philadelphia 76ers won that game against the Miami Heat.
During his time in jail, Meek had many fans and fellow celebrities advocating for his release. Even the power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z were very outspoken about their distaste of Meek’s imprisonment.
In honor of Philly, and Meek, why not take a look of some of the city’s most famous yummy foods.
Philly Cheese Steak
Philly cheesesteaks were made popular in last century and have been an American, and of course Philly, staple ever since! To make a Philly cheesesteak, all you need is some thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, and a hoagie roll. Now there have been many variations of the dish, and some even say if the bag isn’t greasy then it isn’t good! Let me know some of your favorite places to get a cheesesteak! If you’d like to see the Darius Cooks’ take on the Philly classic, check out my Philly Cheesesteak Mac and Cheese video on Facebook at facebook.com/DariusCooks!
There are different stories for when the hoagie was invented, but the one fact everyone seems to agree on is that hoagies are a product of Philly culture. If you love a good sandwich then you’d probably love a hoagie. A mayor of Philadelphia even named it the official sandwich of the city! Any variation of meats and cheeses can go inside a hoagie roll, and there’s no ‘proper’ way to make one.
I couldn’t leave out one of the best food items to come out of Philadelphia…Philadelphia Cream Cheese! Cream cheese started gaining popularity as early as the 1820’s on the east coast in cities like Philadelphia and New York. Now, Philadelphia Cream Cheese is the top of mind pick for all your cream cheese needs. Some of the best desserts have been made so, so much better by using cream cheese. And who doesn’t love a good bagel with a cream cheese topping?
