Honestly. What’s not to love about this place. Anytime I’m in a stone’s throw of South Florida, I make my way on over. This place has quickly become one of my top places to visit in the US.
I was the first in the joint because, well, I wanted to take no chances in having to wait in some line. If you get there early enough, you won’t need a reservation. And if you go on a weekday, even better!
I was 7 minutes early and they opened the door and let me in! I started with probably their most popular appetizer. It’s a BLT situation. Let me explain. It’s fried green tomatoes and on top is a house made pimento cheese, braised pork belly, a frisée salad, and hidden underneath is a bit of tomato jam. Um, need I say anymore? Now do you see why it’s a top seller?
I won’t lie. It’s a bit pricey. But, here, you get exactly what you pay for. I did order a cocktail. It was the southern peach. Of course, it was delicious. It came with a huge thyme sprig as a garnish. Don’t tell anyone that I put it in my pocket and took it home with me. I’ll use it in a recipe later. lol.
My second appetizer (because I couldn’t just chose one) was the Virginia ham biscuits. They’re good. But, here’s how you make them better. Get a side of the bourbon maple syrup and get to dipping. You’ll thank me later. The biscuits have a slight crunch to them while the inside is pillowy and fluffy. I mean, it’s just good food.
For my main, I had the fried chicken with honey hot sauce. One word: amazing. Now, listen. It’s not completely life changing. However, if you’re in the middle of a mid-life crisis, it’ll help you choose the right path. The outside is crispy. It’s seasoned perfectly. The inside is juicy. I mean, what more can you ask for? And what I love is that the hot sauce does the Houdini trick. It starts sweet and finishes slightly spicy. Ask for two containers of hour sauce because one won’t be enough.
I finished with the cheesecake. It’s good. And I’m no dessert person. The presentation was cute and honestly, it was a solid cheesecake. But listen, you don’t go to a place like Yardbird for the cheesecake. You go for the chicken!
